Mural Art Brief History
Mural painting is a crucial medium for storytelling. It is prevalent practically everywhere around the globe and acts as a universal medium, addressing concerns that people frequently experience while extending much beyond the scope of a straightforward painting. Mural art does not avoid what is wrong; rather, it confronts it head-on and asks what can be done to make things better.
Mural art today includes any pieces of artwork created or directly placed on a permanent surface. Following the Mexican Revolution in the 1920s, the popular painting technique known as muralism, which was employed by many artists, including Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci, achieved its pinnacle of acceptance.
Through the monumental works of the great three, José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, mural painting became the most prominent form of expression. These pieces are typically the subject of discussions and are a constant representation of positivity, freedom, and unity. The Chicano art movement in the 1960s, which was largely influenced by Mexican mural painting, was the greatest of these tendencies.
Famous Muralists in the World Today
As we amble down the streets lined with some of the most breathtaking murals in the whole world, we got to see Guido van Helten, Fintan Magee, Okuda San Miguel, Swoon, Ernest Zacharevic, and some other famous muralists leaving their thoughts on the walls in many cities, allowing anybody to appreciate their work for free. Their artwork serves as a constant reminder that all we have constructed is ultimately a reflection of who they are and that they are accountable for the lives they build for both themselves and others. Listed below are the aforementioned artists and their best artworks.
Ingrid Valerie Cagas: A young master of Mural Arts
One of the highly-regarded young artists today is Ingrid Valerie Cagas, a 17- year old Singapore-raised Filipino artist who is currently based in Marikina City. This beautiful, highly-spirited, and gifted muralist has been featured by some local magazines because of her astonishing works of art that are displayed around the Philippines.
Ingrid Valerie's Life as a Young Mural Artist
Growing up in Singapore, she hadn’t exposed herself to arts, until she first discovered it way back in 2015. Ingrid learned how to draw on her own by watching her friends and seniors do sketches and some random doodles. At first, she struggled with understanding the fundamentals of this art because she wasn’t really encouraged to pursue arts and was only advised to study and get high grades in school, but when she once got the hang of it, she just learned it for fun. At the age of 15, she transitioned her style from pencil sketches and doodles into realistic portraits. According to Ingrid Valerie in our exclusive interview, in order to master this craft, she practiced a lot. She practiced in form of studying every detail of this art as well as getting along with some other older and veteran artists whom she learned from.
One of the closest inspirations of Ingrid Valerie, as an artist, is her cousin, Joemari Cagas. He is also a painter and landscape artist whose works are deeply influenced by nature, he’s also the one who taught young Ingrid Valerie how to appreciate the process of painting any subject, as well as how to live with it as if her life revolves around it.
In 2017, she painted her first-ever mural and this was also the exact time she realized that it really is her passion. Since then, this form of art, without a doubt, helped her to reach the abilities that she was not able to portray before, and through her works, she got the opportunity to enhance her skills socially and artistically; and it made her a better person.
At a very young age, she met a lot of famous people, including some local and professional artists in the Philippines and she’s looking forward to meeting more of them. Currently, Ingrid Valerie Cagas is an in-house artist at Luna Galleria, Antipolo, and Artfusion. Her artworks are displayed in various museums and hotels around the country. Recently, Ingrid Valerie, alongside other various artists was featured in the Luna Galleria’s Transmission Magazine making her the youngest artist highlighted in the group.
